"Nutriri is truly inclusive - there is something very powerful & very beautiful about meeting each person where they are at"
What has been your lived experience of diet/judgement culture?
Sadly, from about the age of 12 or 13 to 26 or so, I suffered from major discomfort in my body & subsequently, immense anxiety around food. This had me trapped in a cycle of very restrictive eating (& inevitable bingeing), punitive, unenjoyable exercise, isolation, stress, anxiousness & overall a feeling of great physical, emotional & mental malaise & unhappiness. Ultimately, this miserable preoccupation with food, stripped me of my vitality, confidence & made me retract from the joy of life, relationships, spontaneity & pleasure.
What lead you to Nutriri?
I can’t remember exactly - but likely during a “nutrition” or “health” internet rabbit hole - I thankfully happened upon the Intuitive Eating philosophy. I began (very gradually) to seek out different resources on body acceptance & food peace & it was during this process that I was fortunate enough to find Nutriri. It was a total revelation to me that there existed another perspective - that I didn’t have to hate my body & I certainly didn’t have to fear food.
What have you learnt?
This new understanding absolutely changed my life. In the last few years, I’ve unlearned restrictive diet rules alongside practicing true, holistic self-care, mindfulness & self-acceptance. I’ve transferred all the energy I used to spend on self-criticism & attempts at self control, & instead used it to fuel self-kindness. Crucially, & with the invaluable help of this network, I’ve connected with others who have also been been tormented by diet culture, who have helped me process my experience & utilise it in a proactive way. By immersing myself as much as possible in the scientific research that supports the NON-DIET approach & by learning the historical fact that diet culture is an ugly & cruel manifestation of patriarchy, sexism, racism & capitalism - & really allowing myself to get angry at this very oppressive, demeaning system - I have completely transformed my relationship with eating & my body. This has been supported by a BSc in Biology, followed by a MSc in Food & Health & the official Intuitive Eating Counsellor training, which I am currently undertaking.
Currently, my ambition is to offer these learnings & life experience to help others deconstruct destructive diet thinking & behaviours, come home to their bodies & find joy in a kind of movement that feels genuinely appealing & sustainable. Nutriri is absolutely conducive to this goal.
Why I support Nutriri is because it is truly inclusive - there is something very powerful & very beautiful about meeting each person where they are at - whether that is deep in the trenches of self-objectification & disordered eating - or at an advanced state of mindfulness, body love & food harmony - or anywhere along that spectrum. It creates a very sacred space where we can all learn from eachother, share our experiences & co-create a new approach to living. It rejects teaching the diet mindset to children & wants to host workshops in schools to help avoid the kind of pain I experienced in my adolescence. It incorporates very simple but effective spiritual approaches, such as meditation & hypnotherapy, that really help to overcome food struggles or body distrust. It takes an inquisitive but non-shaming approach as to what anxiety or feeling of unworthiness is at the root of damaging behaviours like restriction, bingeing, purging, food guilt, overexercise, body-checking or body comparisons. I can completely understand skepticism of any organisation that proposes to help you with your body or with food - we’ve been lied to repeatedly by diet culture & are so deeply entrenched in this paradigm that it can be really hard to consider, that in actual fact, your body is not broken & it doesn’t need fixing.
But Nutriri is something radically different. It will connect you with powerful, compassionate men & women that can support you on your individual intuitive eating journey - which is by the way, is non-linear & different for everyone. It will allow you to reframe how you see yourself & how you value your body. It will teach you boundary setting. It establishes a safe space for you to unpack how you are feeling & supplies an inclusive, non-judgemental environment for you to learn new coping skills, so that you are not totally reliant on food/body control to self-soothe. It will empower you to distance yourself from diet culture & help you to reclaim your life. This makes incredible space for new found joys, hobbies, intimacy.. the possibilities are endless. Let me tell you, life outside diet culture is rich & full - & Nutriri can help you establish a much more positive, peaceful way of living.
