Who created The Food & Body Ease course?

  • Blog by: VCSE Nutriri

In a world where ‘slimming groups’ often promise quick fixes and keep weight change as the ultimate goal, many of us have felt the pressure to conform. We’re bombarded with messages that equate lighter with healthier, creating a constant self belief of ‘not there yet’ and ‘make change now’. At Nutriri, we wanted to create something different—something that values 8 billion kinds of normal and provides a supportive community where every individual's experience is respected.

So how did Nutriri start?

Way back in 2015… with little idea of what ‘it’ needed to be… we started a meetup group and listened. Listened to the stories that spanned lifetimes, stories of stressed out supermarket trips; the chaotic dance between virtue and syn!; the endless overthink and then hearing the self blame and the raging inner critic. We had an inkling that gathering as many of these experiences as we could would inform what we could collectively do next.

Understanding Why People Turn to ‘Slimming Groups’

These groups often attract individuals seeking support and validation in their weight change efforts. A group can offer a sense of community, shared experiences, and a structured path with weight-related goals. However, the focus on weight change overshadows the need for an holistic, individualised approach to health. People come to these groups looking for guidance and connection, but the emphasis on weight compounds self-comparison and a ‘success-failure’ cycle that only benefits the group provider.

The Good Bits: What Makes Nutriri Different

The Food & Body Ease course has been co-designed as a framework to meet you where you are, embracing whatever feelings and practices you currently have around food and movement. We emphasise compassionate self-knowledge and acceptance, and have created a space where kindness and support are foundational. Here, we celebrate each person's unique experience with validation and encouragement to develop our own version of ease around food and body - regardless of any personal weight change thinking.

Making It Personal: Your Experience, Your Way

The Nutriri Food & Body Ease course is all about co-creating your own approach. We recognize that your past experiences shape who you are today, and we value those lived experiences. Whether you choose to share your backstory or keep it private, your experience is respected. We invite you to engage as much or as little as you feel comfortable, knowing there is no right or wrong way to participate. The  freedom to tailor the course to your needs and preferences, fostering a sense of ownership and empowerment - this is never going to be something to pass or fail at!

Co-Creating and Evolving Together

Nutriri was founded by Helen James to transform her years of yo-yo dieting into a meaningful exploration of innate well-being. Our approach is grounded in de-stressing food and movement, rather than focusing on weight change; shifting the narrative from mere goals to nurturing overall health… Nutriri means ‘to nurture’..

Since 2015, we’ve been listening, learning, and evolving our Food & Body Ease and Weight Neutral Training courses. We see every interaction as an opportunity to refine and improve what we offer, ensuring that our programs remain relevant and supportive. We call our space a Co-Learning Hub because it’s a trusted environment where you can connect just as you are—without judgement or pressure.
